Synopsis

"Being an A&E doctor is like being a detective. It's the closest you get to being Hercule Poirot, I guess. You've got to start from scratch, look for your evidence and make a sensible judgement as to 'whodunnit'. You really have to think about every possible diagnosis while you're examining the patient, that's the hard bit. But getting it right is such a buzz - that's why I became a doctor." Sanjay Purkayastha, A&E Junior Doctor Accident and Emergency is widely regarded among Julior doctors as one of the scariest and most challenging places to work. Patients come in with a myriad of illnesses from the mundane to the life-threatening. Decisions have to be made under great pressure and with little, if any, information about the patient. This 5 x 50' series takes you inside the minds of junior doctors as they attempt to diagnose and treat a number of critically ill patients. Filmed over a period of six months, the doctors take us through some of their most challenging cases, revealing the detective work of diagnosis and their private thoughts and fears. The series combines actuality footage with a new approach to 3-D graphics, taking the audience inside the body of the patient and revealing at crucial moments what the doctor is unable to see. The result is a gripping real-time record of each critical moment in a patient's first hour in A&E. When will doctor spot what's actually wrong with Mr Runas and why he collapsed? What is the cause of Mr Broadfoot's 'suicide headaches'? Could Mr Purser be having a heart attack even though he feels no pain?
