Valley, The
Synopsis
The human face behind a country ravaged by ethnic strife is given a platform in Dan Reed’s brave film of the war in Kosovo
For decades, the Drenica region had been a hotbed of Albanian separatism and the base for the underground Kosovo Liberation Army, the KLA. In March 1998, in an attempt to reclaim the territory they believe to be theirs, the KLA clashed with Serbian forces, igniting, in Dan Reed’s words“the biggest Balkan powder keg of all”.
The Valley’s camera crew spent four months cultivating relationships with members on both sides of the conflict, in a climate where trust is a fast-disappearing currency.
The result is an extraordinary film which neither condemns nor commends, but shares the fear, dignity, pain and pride of a people plunged into a living nightmare.
