Synopsis
“Change, whether it is inevitable or not, is not always progress,” says 82-year-old Norman Lewis. With this in mind, Britain’s oldest travel journalist journeys into Irian Jaya, a land where stone-age existence is mixed with modern-day life. Lewis spends the first part of the programme with the Dani, a cannibalistic tribe whose lifestyle has not changed for centuries – until a new concrete development in the jungle, at Wanema, thrust the 20th century upon them. With it has come the dilution of the tribe’s ancient culture. Lewis then visits an American-owned mine in the Etrzberg Mountain. The mine only employs Dani tribesmen for the lowest jobs, leaving the question: have the Dani profited at all since the outsiders came?
