Tony Kaye: The Outsider

Synopsis
One man's struggle to be taken seriously as an artist

Tony Kaye coined the term ‘hype-art’ to define his own contributions to the cause. Kaye has employed a homeless man to parade through art galleries with ‘by Tony Kaye’ on his back. He has displayed models with AIDS accompanied by vials of their blood and he spent £2 million on a documentary on abortion. A self-serving self-publicist or an ironic commentator on our confused relationship with art? Beyond the stunts, Tony Kaye is desperate to be taken seriously as an artist. But who decides who is and who isn’t an artist? Arthouse probes beyond the tabloid reactions and sniffy dismissals to ask some serious questions.
