The series conjures up all the indulgence and extravagance of the age: starched linen sheets smelling of lavender; exotic fruits and vegetables piled high as table decorations; foie gras and oysters, flowers suspended in quivering jellies and lavish arrangements using orchids, carnations and lilies. Each programme focuses in greater depth on aspects of life that are touched upon in The Edwardian Country House, such as produce from the Edwardian kitchen garden, medicinal cures and how to decorate a table. Hugh learns how to make luxuries like beeswax polish, aromatic bath soaks, gentleman's relish and lavender ice cream. In the authentic setting of an Edwardian kitchen, he recreates some of the splendid dishes from The Edwardian Country House, learns some household tips, experiments with new recipes, and samples luscious beauty creams and soaps made from oatmeal, beeswax, rosebuds and lavender flowers. Hugh also meets people whose lives evoke aspects of the era; the gardener who is growing strains of vegetables dating from 1910; the modern incarnation of an Edwardian orchid hunter; the beekeeper, the ice sculptor and the haberdasher who sells designs based on Parisian styles from the early 1900s to modern-day haute couture fashion designers.
