Vile Bodies
Synopsis
Death, disability, childhood sexuality – deeply-held taboos are challenged by some of the world’s most controversial photographers in three shocking films.
In Naked, 77 year-old John Coplans exposes his wrinkled, pot-bellied body to the camera to produce striking black and white self-portraits. Joel-Peter Witkin finds beauty in the obese, the tortured and the physically deformed, challenging our acceptance of what is normal. Kids shows Sally Mann’s depictions of her own children – miserable, elated, sleeping and naked – that were deemed exploitative by much of the world. Photographers featured in The Dead explain how their photos of victims of crime, bodies in mortuaries and dissected body parts have transformed their attitudes to death.
