Wagner's Women
Synopsis
The women behind the musical great
The 21 detailed and explicit diaries of Wagner’s second wife Cosima were finally released in 1972, having lain in the vaults of a Munich bank for most of the century. They have been used extensively in creating this dramatised documentary. Cosima’s infatuation with Wagner is revealed to the point where we learn that she preserved single hairs from his eyebrows as if they were sacred relics. But despite their long and intimate relationship, Wagner’s Women reveals that she wasn’t the only one to give him inspiration for his music, some of which is regarded as the most passionate of the century. He drew inspiration from his mother, both of his wives and his most sensuous works were inspired by his many affairs.
