The fatal explosion that desroyed the Nazi airship with the loss of 36 passengers was put down to a bolt of lightning igniting the hydrogen. It spelt the end of the airship industry as passenger confidence was lost. But new investigations have revealed that the skin of the Hindenburg was covered in highly flammable paint that ignited in the middle of an electric storm.
