AIDS: The Global Killer travels from Zambia, where poverty, cultural tradition and lack of education have helped the HIV virus kill thousands, and will help it cause the death of thousands more; to Moscow, where needle sharing among drug users has given the city the fastest rising rate of HIV infection in the world, yet almost nothing is being done to prevent the spread of illness; and finally, to the UK to meet the ‘lucky’ AIDS patients for whom those expensive ‘wonder drugs’ are available. Less publicised are the problems of drug resistance and damaging side effects - ever present dangers to many of those whose lives are being prolonged by these medications. Nick Danziger takes us on a saddening journey that illustrates just how alive this horror really is.
