Appointment With Dr Death
Synopsis
The debate surrounding voluntary euthanasia has never raged more fiercely. Dr Jack Kevorkian, the man at the eye of the storm, talks frankly to Witness about what motivates him to defend and actively aid the human right to die.
Kevorkian, known as Dr Death, has used his intravenous suicide machine for a record of 46 suicides and continues to flout American opinion and defeat the US Supreme Court. His arguments in favour of humane suicides have their supporters, and a candid documentary shows both sides of the debate. Emotional appeals from family members – like Dawn who wanted her mother to die with dignity, and Heidi who watched her husband “freed” from his burden of Alzheimer’s – are offset by disturbing autopsy findings that three out of 39 of Kervorkian’s patients “had no anatomical evidence of disease at all”.
