Art Crime
Synopsis
In 1969, a band of Mafia thieves changed the face of the art world forever. They broke into a small Palermo church and stole a priceless Caravaggio.
Overnight the innocence of the arts and antiques trade was lost and precious paintings and artefacts became collateral in the international drugs trade. For crime syndicates with dirty cash, the market has become a laundering machine with confidentiality guaranteed. Art Crime traces the fate of some of the world’s most famous ‘missing’ paintings. General Conforti, head of the Italian Art Squad, comments: “The profits made from the sale of stolen art are second only to the profits made by the trafficking of drugs and arms. We are talking about billions of pounds.”
