Beneath The Veil
Synopsis
Saira Shah risked her life going undercover in Afghanistan – a place where you can be beaten for flying a kite or executed for being gay – to paint a shocking and disturbing picture of Islamic fundamentalism.
In addition to the regular public slaughter of its civilians, the Taliban continually inflict atrocities towards women. Girls over the age of eight are no longer permitted to go to school, and schools and hospitals have been emptied of female staff. The five days Saira spent disguised as an ordinary Afghan woman were both extremely dangerous and terrifying. She wore the all enveloping burqa, lived in safe houses and dodged Taliban checkpoints to discover the appalling truth – that as a woman in Afghanistan you can be beaten up, imprisoned or killed for a ‘crime’ you didn’t even know you were committing.
