Synopsis
Following Britain's leading pet detectives

Britain is facing an epidemic of pet robberies. Driven by a shrinking economy, tighter restrictions on the control of rare species and our craving for expensive pets, thefts and kidnappings are on the up. This film follows the country’s leading pet detectives as they attempt to unravel some of the most compelling and dramatic cases in the country and reunite the victims of such heartless criminals with their beloved lost pets. The Pet Detectives: John Hayward is an ex-cop, a DI in Thames Valley Police. Today he is Britain’s No.1 pet detective. 12,000 cases so far, with countless cases solved. He investigates the thefts of exotic pets – rare parrots, cherished tortoises, scarlet macaws. Hayward is determined to solve one of the most spectacular and shocking crimes of all – the theft and murder of Cornish breeder Andrew Pooley’s budgies. Breeders may well stop at nothing to destroy a rival.

Tom Watkins runs Animal Search UK from sheds in his back garden. ASUK gets 1000 calls per month regarding lost or stolen dogs/cats. His 24hr call centre responds to requests from all over the UK. Initial consultation leads to targeted physical searches. Marked cars, hi-visibility jackets and door-to-door searches all conducted in a modern policing style. Tom has a 60% success rate. Tom is keen on technological solutions; GPS dog collars are starting to work but he has lost his own dog several times during recent trials. Colin Butcher (ex- CID) and Samantha Stringer (ex-RSPCA) run “The Pet Detectives”. Their mission is to find “Biscuit” a pedigree springer spaniel. This cherished animal was targeted and stolen either for breeding or resale. Using all the techniques available to the 21st Century sleuth, Colin and Sam are homing in on thieves who deal in dogs, pure breed, high value dogs.
