With the world’s last oil and gas reserves exposed in the thawing Arctic, a growing group of entrepreneurs, troops and exiled politicians have travelled north to the unplanned and lawless town of Borealis, each vying for their share of ‘black gold’ and a stake in the earth’s newest and last frontier.
Sabotage, politics, lawlessness and greed lurk around every corner. Guns, alcohol, drugs and polar bears mix dangerously with people who will kill with little provocation – those who will do anything to protect their turf and claim a piece of the action.
At the center of it all is Vic Carboneau – an ex-ultimate fighter and the man who built and controls the only way in or out of Borealis: the airstrip. While he runs the town’s hotel, bar and brothel, Vic’s plan is to make a lot of money and get back down to Montreal where he has some unfinished business. Borealis is his ticket home.
But Borealis only works for Vic (and Canada) if there is a balance of power which is under constant threat from the Russians and Americans. But there’s more at stake in Borealis than just gas and oil.
There’s a scientific research station nearby manned by Alison Freemont - a highly respected biologist. Prior to Vic’s arrival, she was the only permanent resident on the island, overseeing the nearby Natural Heritage Lands. The last thing she wants is more people around – and even less the damage they bring. Where Vic sees a once-in-a-millennium opportunity, Alison sees an ecological catastrophe in the making.
While Vic does his best to keep things running smoothly in Borealis, the “law” comes in the form of the Canadian military led by Raminder but when things start to heat up and an international shake up of control looms, the UN sends in Svetlana to keep things on an even keel.
