Synopsis
Can a detective get a first ever conviction for a barbaric procedure that’s been banned for decades?

The horrific crime of female genital mutilation is banned in the UK but it is estimated that nearly 20,000 women a year are still at risk of the procedure. And despite being banned more than 30 years ago there have been no successful convictions. This harrowing documentary, from reporter Cathy Newman, follows the work of DCI Leanne Pook and her team, who are tackling the crime in Bristol. We watch as they follow leads from the likes of teachers and doctors, while trying to deal with concerns that their activity is seen as racial profiling. They have a six-year-old victim in their sights and the case succeeds in going to court. Pook is looking at the first ever conviction for FGM in the UK; however, the judge throws the case out over inconsistent medical evidence and the perpetrators go free.
