Surrendering – the exploitation and oppression of women, or the key to modern day marital bliss? America’s emergent Surrendered Wives believe that women’s striving to be equal with men is at the root of unhappiness and the disintegration of marriages. Laura Doyle, author of a recent book on the subject, heads support groups that have counseled more than 1,000 women. The theory is that while it’s fine to smash the glass ceiling in the workplace, at home a husband should control everything, including sex – a surrendered wife should always be available, and always say yes. So what is going on? Must women regress to historical gender ‘roles’ in order to enjoy a successful relationship? Meet Connie, Tammy and Merilee who are hoping that attending Laura’s workshop will restore their relationships. Although unconvinced about aspects of surrendering, they must decide – did our grandmothers really know best?
