Synopsis

The great apes are man’s closest relatives, yet in the jungles of West Africa they are being hunted to extinction for their meat. As the adults are killed, their orphaned young are kept as pets. Outrageous behaviour, or the natural order of species? This honest documentary unravels the truth behind the headlines. Cameroonians have killed apes in small numbers for centuries. The arrival of western logging companies upset the balance. Huge roads were cut through forests, destroying habitats and exposing the apes to opportunistic hunters who now kill for money. A gorilla carcass fetches a good price, enough to lift its seller out of poverty for a time. Should we save the apes or save a way of life?
