In this remarkable one-off documentary, historian Robert Temple reveals the existence of an ancient underground mock-up of 'hell', known as Hades to the Greeks. Complete with artificial River Styx it was the site where prophetic séances were held. In ancient times, clients 'descending into hell' believed they were truly entering the real Hades and did not know that it was artificially constructed. The tunnels are carved out of solid rock and extend for about a quarter of a mile to an Inner Sanctum where the séances were held. This site was known in antiquity as the Oracle of the Dead, and it is mentioned by various ancient writers such as Strabo and Vergil. Robert Temple leads a fully filmed excavation into these previously unexplored underground caverns, where he undertakes some hair-raising and dangerous crawls through nearly impassable passages.
