Synopsis
Civil War examines the key players and events of the English revolution using the techniques of contemporary news coverage to bring the momentous events of 1649 to life for a millennial audience.

Narrated by radical writer and comedian Jeremy Hardy, Civil War features ‘live’ coverage of the fevered activity in the House of Commons as the members, including little-known newcomer Oliver Cromwell, struggle to bring the monarch to heel. The programme features personal testimonies from the heart of the civil war including ‘video diaries’ from John Lilburne, Lucy Hitchinson and Edward Hyde. Civil War brings to vibrant life a watershed year in English history, the year that lay the foundations for democracy and civil liberties in England and the year that saw the people execute their king.
